When did Veterans Day start?

In 1954.  President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the first Veterans Day proclamation calling on the U.S. to honor the veterans of all it wars.

Why is Veterans Day on November 11?

That’s the date on which the Allied Powers signed the cease-fire agreement with Germany ending World War I.

Why does the parade start at 11:11 a.m.?

Because the cease-fire agreement was signed at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, after four years of war.

Who operates the parade?

Georgia Veterans Day Parade Association of Atlanta, Inc., a nonprofit organization. The committee that puts on the parade is composed of volunteers from veterans groups, active duty military, and civic minded members of the community.  This year’s parade is the 26th Annual Veterans Day Parade in Atlanta.  The group began hosting a banquet and Grand Ball on Veterans Day evening about 11 years ago.

Who pays for the parade?

Many individuals and organizations team up to help pay for the parade.  They help by sponsoring floats or parade entries, buying banquet tickets, donating prizes, placing ads in the parade program and making direct financial contributions.  No one pays an entry fee to march in the parade, although entrants often choose to make a donation as well.
